Holmium Metal Description
Holmium metal is a soft and malleable rare earth element. It has a melting point of 1474°C, a boiling point of 2695°C, and a density of 8.7947g/㎝³. Holmium metal is fairly corrosion-resistant and stable in dry air at standard temperature and pressure but easily oxidizes in moist air. Holmium has the highest magnetic moment of the naturally occurring elements and forms highly magnetic compounds when alloyed with yttrium.

Primary Industrial Applications
- High-Flux Pole Pieces: Possessing the highest magnetic saturation, holmium is alloyed into pole pieces for high-field superconducting magnets and NMR equipment to concentrate magnetic flux.
- Ho:YAG Medical Lasers: Doped into Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Ho:YAG) crystals to produce 2.1μm infrared lasers, widely used in urology (lithotripsy/kidney stone fragmentation), dentistry, and surgical procedures.
- Nuclear Reactor Control Rods: Excellent thermal neutron absorber (~65 barns cross-section), making it a key burnable poison and control element in nuclear fission reactors.
- Magnetostrictive Alloys: Used alongside Dysprosium and Terbium in specialized smart materials and acoustic transducers.
