Gadolinium Oxide Powder Description

Gadolinium Oxide (Gd2O3), also known as Gadolinium (III) oxide, Digadolinium trioxide, gadolinium (+3) cation, oxygen (-2) anion, oxygen (-2) dihydride anion, is an inorganic compound that is insoluble in water and mineral acids.

Gadolinium Oxide is used for making optical glass and Gadolinium Yttrium Garnets which have microwave applications. High purity of Gadolinium Oxide is used for making phosphors for color TV tubes. Cerium Oxide (in the form of Gadolinium doped ceria) creates an electrolyte with both high ionic conductivity and low operating temperatures that are optimal for the cost-effective production of fuel cells. It is one of the most commonly available forms of the rare earth element Gadolinium, derivatives of which are potential contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging.

Gadolinium Oxide Powder Application

1. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI):

Contrast Agents: Gadolinium Oxide is widely used in the production of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Gadolinium enhances the contrast of images by affecting the relaxation times of protons in the body’s tissues, making it easier to distinguish between different types of tissues and abnormalities.

2. Industrial Reactors:

Neutron Absorber: Gadolinium Oxide is used as a neutron absorber in industrial reactors. It is often added to industrial fuel or control rods to help control the rate of the industrial fission reaction. Its strong neutron absorption capability makes it an effective material for managing reactivity in reactors.

3. Phosphors for Display and Lighting:

Phosphor Applications: Gadolinium Oxide is used as a phosphor in various display technologies, including cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and plasma display panels (PDPs). It is also used in certain types of fluorescent lamps, where it can emit visible light when excited by electrons or ultraviolet light.

4. Optical Applications:

Infrared-Optical Devices: Gadolinium Oxide is used in the production of infrared-absorbing optical materials. It is valuable in the development of devices that require precise control of infrared radiation, such as sensors and other optical components.

5. High-Temperature Ceramics:

Stabilizer in Ceramics: Gadolinium Oxide is used as a stabilizer in high-temperature ceramics. It helps to improve the thermal and mechanical stability of ceramic materials, making them suitable for use in extreme environments such as in aerospace and other high-temperature applications.

6. Magnetic Materials:

Magnetic Refrigeration: Gadolinium Oxide is explored for use in magnetic refrigeration systems. Due to gadolinium’s unique magnetic properties, it is a promising material for more energy-efficient cooling systems that rely on the magnetocaloric effect.

7. Research and Development:

Material Science Research: Gadolinium Oxide is used in various research applications to develop new materials with unique magnetic, optical, and electronic properties. It is often studied in the context of advanced materials and nanotechnology.

8. Catalysis:

Catalyst in Chemical Reactions: Gadolinium Oxide can act as a catalyst in certain chemical reactions, particularly in organic synthesis and polymerization processes. Its catalytic properties are utilized to speed up reactions and improve yields.
